CARPHA conducts research and provides technical assistance on:
CARPHA conducts studies on health, environmental and social impact assessments in the Caribbean. Health impact studies identify major health problems facing the Region, determine the potential for their control and evaluate the impact of interventions. Environmental and social impact assessments focus on the impacts of human activity on the environment and the consequent effects on human health and the socio-economic development of CARICOM States.
There is a need to promote a research culture and strengthen the Region’s capacity to conduct public health research and utilize those results to improve health and foster development in the Caribbean. CARPHA is facilitating the development and strengthening of health research and related capacity in the Caribbean by conducting training workshops for professional and technical personnel working in the Caribbean Region in the areas of:
The training plays an important role in increasing the level of research literacy among all public health professionals and has contributed significantly to the strengthening of a research culture in the Caribbean, empowering the public health professional to respond to the challenges they face using a scientific approach.
CARPHA is working with Caribbean governments and other stakeholders to develop a strategic research agenda for public health in CARICOM. This will focus on the evidence-based research needed to address public health challenges in the Region.
CARPHA is proactive in addressing public health concerns through its evidence-based research and sharing results regionally and internationally. This is particularly evident with public health goods, such as disease surveillance for which the cost and benefits spill over national boundaries requiring regional and global collaboration and action.
Regionally, CARPHA will coordinate the efforts of the Dutch, French and Spanish Caribbean in public health research to streamline activities, reducing duplication of effort and resources.
Internationally CARPHA provides a focal point for the exchange of public health research of global interest.
In support of this CARPHA is strengthening baseline information on public health by updating relevant databases.
