Within CARPHA, HDA is responsible for managing all incoming routine surveillance data from CARPHA member states. Such data are validated and integrated into the CARPHA regional repository for surveillance data.

Surveillance data submitted by member states include weekly data on reportable syndromes; weekly reporting of severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) from sentinel member states; confirmed and suspected cases of communicable diseases under regional surveillance which are reported every 4 weeks; annual reporting of incident HIV, AIDS and STI cases; and annual reporting of mortality data.

Additionally, selected data reported from the CARPHA Laboratory are incorporated into the regional surveillance databases. More Laboratory Services

HDA is also responsible for working together with other technical departments within the Surveillance, Disease Prevention and Control Division to develop and disseminate useful routine regional surveillance reports.

Laboratory Technician

The role of the Health Information and Data Analysis Department (HDA) is two-fold; maintenance of regional surveillance databases and technical support in the area of health information and data analysis to CARPHA member states.


    Technical support to carpha member states

    HDA provides technical support to member states to improve national surveillance systems through capacity building, development of surveillance tools and evaluations of surveillance systems.


    Specifically, the following services are provided by HDA to member states:



    • Technical support to strengthen national mortality surveillance systems:
  • Evaluation of existing national mortality surveillance system

  • Audit of processed cause-of-death data

  • Validation of annual national mortality data

  • Training in ICD-10 mortality coding and underlying cause-of-death selection (including training in automated coding software)

  • Coordination of the Caribbean Mortality Coders Network

  • Information system support for data entry, validation and reporting of cause-of-death data (Mortbase)

  • Training for physicians in the correct completion of the medical cause-of-death certificate

  • Training in appropriate data analysis techniques and reporting mechanisms

  • Information system support for data entry, validation and reporting of surveillance data.
